Alayna Alvarez

Staff Writer & Assistant to the VP of Marketing
Oceana Staff

Alayna Alvarez, born and raised in South Texas, says she's always loved two things: wildlife and writing.

Before moving to Washington, D.C. in May 2016 to join Oceana as the administrative assistant, she worked as a general assignment reporter for the Victoria Advocate, a freelance writer, and held various internships while studying journalism at the University of Texas at Austin — the most impactful being an editorial internship with Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine. There she not only learned how to fuse her two passions together, but also felt inspired and compelled to pursue environmental journalism and protect the planet, as well as all of its precious inhabitants.

When the opportunity to become part of the Oceana family and write for Azula presented itself, Alvarez was thrilled.

"Joining a cause as profound and vital as Oceana's is a privilege, an honor and an opportunity of a lifetime. Today our planet needs our protection now more than ever, and I am blessed to be gifted a job that helps put that into action."
