Communications Associate

General Summary

Oceana is seeking a Communications Associate to provide day-to-day communications support for its U.S. campaigns, including efforts to stop the expansion of dirty and dangerous offshore drilling, stop illegal fishing and seafood fraud, and promote responsible fishing practices, helping protect sharks, sea turtles and corals.

The communications associate will report to Oceana’s senior director of communications and will be a member of the U.S. communications team. The communications associate will be responsible for managing public relations efforts surrounding Oceana’s U.S. campaigns, including efforts to increase visibility and public awareness about Oceana’s campaign issues. In addition to securing quality news coverage about Oceana’s U.S. campaigns, the communications associate will also assist with all forms of communication and outreach related to targeted audiences, including reports, brochures and fact sheets.

The communications associate will also work closely with Oceana’s in-house design team and outside design consultants to create materials for numerous audiences such as the media, elected officials and donors. This position will also be responsible for providing writing and editing support to Oceana’s U.S. campaign teams as needed, including drafting opinion pieces, press materials and other documents.

Additionally, the communications associate will work with the campaign teams, communications staff and Oceana’s marketing department to develop social media strategies that expand the visibility of Oceana’s U.S. campaigns into new social media channels.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as a day-to-day communications lead for Oceana’s U.S. campaigns, providing strategic counsel to the campaign teams
  • Assist in the development and execution of communications strategies for Oceana’s U.S. campaigns, managing initiatives through research, planning, implementation and evaluation
  • Cultivate and manage successful relationships with key journalists, partners, vendors and other stakeholders
  • Secure placements for Oceana’s U.S. campaigns in top local, regional and national media outlets, including tracking press coverage and meeting specific goals
  • Orchestrate, manage and execute successful media tours and strategic events for Oceana’s U.S. campaigns
  • Conceptualize, develop and manage production of high-level strategic materials for Oceana’s U.S. campaigns, ranging from communications plans and press releases to reports and advertising campaigns
  • Assist in the development, design and production of reports and other materials, working closely with the campaign teams, communications staff and outside vendors
  • Manage outside vendor agreements for Oceana’s U.S. campaigns with Oceana’s legal department
  • Provide writing and editing support to Oceana’s U.S. campaigns as needed
  • Find opportunities to spread the messages of Oceana’s U.S. campaigns through traditional and online media sources such as letters-to-the-editor, op-eds and blog posts. Efforts include drafting, editing and placing opinion pieces
  • Work with Oceana’s marketing team to develop a stronger voice for the U.S. campaigns on Oceana’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
  • Secure speaking engagements for Oceana’s U.S. campaign experts
  • Assist with other U.S. communications activities as needed

 

Job Requirements

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications or journalism 
  • One to two years of media relations experience with expertise in pitching and writing for the media
  • Strong journalistic writing skills with excellent knowledge and use of the Associated Press Stylebook guidelines
  • Superb writing, editing and verbal communication skills adaptable to a variety of audiences
  • Superior attention to detail
  • In-depth knowledge and use of social media tools, networks and online communities
  • Ability to synthesize complicated scientific jargon quickly and accurately for lay audiences
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, other organizations and the public
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and work under pressure while maintaining humor and high energy
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-changing environment, manage multiple assignments and coordinate with all levels within the organization
  • Ability to approach problems with a sense of ownership, enthusiasm and innovation
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to spot opportunities in times of change
