OCEANA

Oceana (www.oceana.org) campaigns to protect and restore the world’s oceans. Our international team of marine scientists, economists, lawyers and advocates win specific and concrete policy changes to prevent the irreversible collapse of fish populations, marine mammals, plus other sea life and their ecosystems from overfishing, disrupting fishing practices and pollution, amongst others.

Oceana is seeking a full-time legal officer to join our European Policy team. The position is located in Oceana’s Madrid office.

Note: only apply if you fulfill the requirements listed below. However, knowledge of and experience in environmental law in Spain and Europe; previous experience in grants coordination and a bilingual level of English, are essential.

 

Profile:

We are looking for an enthusiastic professional

The Legal officer must have:

  • At least 1 year of ad-hoc experience dealing with environmental legislation, fisheries legislation, or maritime legislation
  • Proven interest in the work conducted by Non-Governmental organizations
  • The ability to work both in a team and individually using their own initiatives.
  • A Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Law.
  • Master Degree or equivalent work experience in Maritime and/ or fisheries sector.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English and Spanish. A good command of third European language (German, Italian or French) will be a plus.
  • Must feel comfortable working under pressure within tight deadlines and able to work in coordination with several members from different countries and cultures. He/she will be results oriented, a self-starter, highly motivated, and an excellent problem solver delivering results professionally and efficiently.
  • He/she will also have research skills database/ data processing software.

 

Responsibilities:

The candidate will be reporting to the Policy Director and:

  • Will provide technical support and advice to the Policy team in fisheries related campaigns
  • Gather, organise and analise relevant data for campaign purposes.
  • Draft position papers and technical documents.
  • Support the team in organizing technical seminars, events and other logistics
  • Participate in relevant meetings with stakeholders, industry and public administrations representing the organization and/or supporting Oceana representatives.

 

Salary

25.000-30.000€ gross depending on the successful candidate experience and skills

Additional information

The post will initially be available for a one year period starting as soon as the successful candidate is selected.
