Science and Strategy Intern

General Summary

Oceana seeks intern(s) with experience in ocean science and a passion for conservation.  The intern will work with the Science & Strategy team at Oceana’s headquarters to help answer important questions for Oceana and support 50+ staff working on science and policy in our 8 global offices.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

The intern will work with the Science and Strategy team to support research activities, communication, and institutional information management needs. The intern will be expected to review primary and secondary literature, assist with collecting, organizing, analyzing, mapping and visually presenting data and writing reports and materials for non-scientific audiences. Topics may include fisheries management, marine plastics, and habitat protection.   


Job Requirements

Education and work experience:

  • Master’s degree in marine science or a related field preferred, however Bachelor’s degree with two years’ work experience will be considered
  • Experience with assembling and analyzing scientific data and resources
  • Experience drafting research summaries and
  • literature reviews
  • Familiarity with collaboration and information management software (e.g., Zotero, Slack), programming languages (e.g., R, Python), and/or GIS is preferred.

Skills and knowledge:

  • Demonstrated interest in the oceans or the environment
  • Organized working style and attention to detail
  • Adaptable to changing plans in a dynamic work environment
  • Science communication, international work experience and/or Spanish language proficiency is preferred
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently on discrete projects
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.

Internships are paid, full-time in our Washington, DC office for a minimum of three months. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed periodically.
