Growing up in Southern California, I have always lived near the ocean. I was drawn to Southeast Alaska—where I pursued my BA degree in culture and environmental studies—because of its close proximity to the ocean and abundance of healthy ecosystems. The ocean affects so many aspects of ecosystems and communities, both globally and locally, and so little is known about it that continued research and advocacy is essential to sustainable management of this important resource for future generations. The technology we have available today provide invaluable tools. Global Information Systems (GIS), for instance, provides not only statistical modeling and analysis but is also a way to bring data to the public in a way that just about anyone can understand. I am delighted and honored to be a part of the Oceana team and for the opportunity to contribute to the protection of the world’s oceans!
