Although I’ve spent the better part of my life in landlocked Central Pennsylvania, I’ve travelled to the ocean on many occasions. Of these occasions, one in particular sticks out in my memory: a catamaran trip among the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. Between the soothing rocking of the boat as I drifted off to sleep, the tranquil silence in open water, and the beauty of the various reefs we snorkeled, I have never felt so relaxed and recharged.

Through such trips and my studies at Washington University in St. Louis, I became aware of the dangers facing our oceans and the Earth as a whole. Foremost among these in my mind is climate change because, unlike other dangers, it threatens the entire biosphere. My strong desire to help combat this threat in part led to my interest in renewable energies, which hold great promise in both abating climate change and simultaneously improving the wellbeing of humans across the globe. As an Energy Analyst at Oceana, I have been provided with the unique opportunity to not only contribute research to the discussion surrounding renewables, but also provide Oceana’s lobbyists with information and data as they collaborate with legislators and stakeholders to decrease fossil fuel consumption and promote renewable energy adoption.
