One More Way to Give to Oceana

As we gear up for the holiday season, we are excited to announce that there is now one more way to support our work to protect the oceans: through a Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), the world's largest annual workplace giving collective.

The mission of the CFC is "to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all."

If you’re a federal employee, you can designate Oceana as your charity of choice through CFC #10051.

Your valuable donations to Oceana will support our campaigns to save threatened marine wildlife, stop ocean pollution, promote responsible fishing and combat climate change and ocean acidification.

For help setting up giving through the CFC, please contact CFC Customer Support via email or at 202.465.7230.  If you are not a federal employee, check out the other ways you can support Oceana!

Outside Magazine’s December issue is out, and they have a feature on “The Year of Giving Adventurously” – guess who’s included?

The editors selected the 30 best organizations to give to this holiday season —“smartly managed groups with transparent financials, efficient spending, and track records of on-the-ground success.”

That’s right, Oceana made the cut! We’re in good company – check out the other fantastic organizations, give to Oceana if you're convinced (we trust you will be) and spread the word.

Your support is as crucial as ever for our campaigns to protect marine wildlife, stop ocean pollution and promote responsible fishing - so thank you!

This November, Celebrate Oceansgiving

Happy November!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and while we love turkey and pumpkin pie as much as the next guy, this year we're also doing something special to give thanks for the oceans -- and we want you to join us!

Here’s how: Starting today and all month long, we’ll be sharing some of the reasons we’re grateful for the oceans over on our Twitter page using the hashtag #oceangiving. Follow us, add your own reasons to the list, and see what other ocean lovers have to say.

But wait, there’s more -- You can take it one step further and sign up with HelpAttack! to donate a little bit every time someone tweets with #oceangiving – no Twitter account needed. You can share your pledge to inspire your friends to join you in supporting the oceans. Ten or 20 cents may not seem like a lot, but every bit adds up and will help us keep working to protect everything you love about the oceans.

Thanks to you, and a big thanks to the oceans we all love!

Help Sea Turtles for Kate Walsh's Birthday!

kate walsh and sea turtle

It’s our favorite sea turtle lover’s birthday today: Kate Walsh!

In lieu of gifts, her fans, also known as Walshies, have been sending donations to – you guessed it – Oceana. So far they’ve raised $400, and the deadline is midnight tonight. So there’s still time if you want to show Kate and sea turtles some love.

Per Kate’s blog: “All it takes is a dollar and a PayPal account. Just click on this link, hit the “Chipin” button, make your donation, and leave a personalised message for Kate! Yup – it’s that easy!”

A huge thanks to everyone who has donated, and happy birthday, Kate!

Charity Navigator Awards Oceana Highest Marks

You could say we’re a straight-A student.

Charity Navigator, the largest charity evaluator in America, has launched an expanded rating system, and Oceana once again scored the highest marks.

In addition to receiving a four-star rating for our financial performance evaluation, Oceana has now received a 4-star rating on Accountability and Transparency. The new rating system allows donors to determine which charities have the “best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and that freely share basic information about the organization with donors and other stakeholders.”

With the bar set higher, the total number of 4-star charities decreased by 20%. Not for us. The new combined score puts Oceana among the highest performing charities that excel in all areas.

In addition to the endorsement from the Charity Navigator, Oceana has also been accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) as a charity that meets all 20 standards for Charity Accountability. This endorsement is a formal recognition that Oceana has undergone a detailed review process and meets the highest operational, financial and ethical standards for charity accountability.

So as you and your loved ones plan your end-of-year giving, keep Oceana in mind. You’ll be able to rest assured knowing your dollars are doing good for the oceans.

And if you don’t want to wait until the end of the year – go ahead and donate now. Thanks for all your support!

For 3rd Year Running, Oceana Receives 4-Star Rating

For the third year in a row, Oceana has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the largest independent evaluator of charities in the U.S., which recently updated their charity ratings.

Our 4-star rating is due to our outstanding organizational efficiency ratings. In other words, we put your money to work.

According to Charity Navigator CEO Ken Berger, "only 13% of the 5,500 charities we rate have received at least 3 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Oceana consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America." He also stated that the designation "differentiates Oceana from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust".

How to Help Oceana Through Crowdrise

I often get questions from supporters who want their friends and family to donate to Oceana instead of traditional birthday, wedding, or anniversary presents. Not only is this an incredibly thoughtful way to give back to the oceans, but it is also incredibly easy!

You can set up an account and personalized fundraising page on Crowdrise in under five minutes. No joke! Here's how:

1.    Create a profile on http://www.crowdrise.com. This literally takes less than 30 seconds.
2.    Check out our page, http://www.crowdrise.com/oceana, and click “Start a Fundraising Project/Event”.
3.    Create your fundraiser! Is it for your birthday? An anniversary? You just want to help out the oceans? Be creative! You can create a customized link, so you can tell your friends to go to http://crowdrise.com/mybirthday to donate to Oceana. Set a goal to inspire folks to donate.
4.    You can upload a pic of yourself (or skip this step).
5.    And then make sure Oceana is the charity you pick for your fundraiser.

Get Your Charity Poster for the Gulf

Here’s one more way you can help the Gulf -- while upping your cool points.

The Heads of State, who have designed posters for the likes of Wilco, Modest Mouse and Sonic Youth, have designed an Oil Drop poster (pictured here), and they’re donating half of the sale price of each -- that's $20 per poster -- to Oceana.

You can feel pretty good about that (we sure do.) Get your posters here and spread the word.
