We start the day at 8 am and head towards Rota to explore the southern part of the Guadalquivir estuary. The seas are calm, which is a good sign because it makes our work with the ROV easier.
We sail for 40 minutes until we are roughly 4 miles from the coast of Rota, in the southern part of the Guadalquivir estuary. We launch the ROV without any problems, the seas are calm and, given the area’s characteristics (the seabeds are at no more than 40 meters depth up to 6 miles from the coast), we won't have any problems.

Today we started working in the Gulf of Cádiz area between Rota and Mazagón, where we will be for approximately two weeks in order to research the seabeds in these waters.

Yesterday we set sail from Seco seamount to the Gulf of Cadiz, where we’ll continue our work to study the seabeds in front of Doñana, area proposed for protection, thanks to its coral reefs and the richness and uniqueness of its soft seabeds.

Today we finished the filming work at Seco de los Olivos planned for this 2010 campaign. In total, we have made 24 ROV submersions. These add up to somewhat more than 40 hours of seabed filming time, up to depths of over 600 m.
We tried to make the last submersion this morning to go out directly toward Almerimar, but the swell was too strong to work without any hazards.

Yesterday we took the day off and took advantage to go shopping, wash clothes and finish some work on board. The divers, Carlos Suárez and Enrique Talledo, arrived at night. They will be on board for three weeks to take photographs and record our work outside and inside the water.

Today was very hot, the seas were calm and there was barely any breeze. We were so hot rolling and unrolling the umbilical cord on the Oceana Ranger’s deck that we threw various buckets of sea water over our heads.

Compared to yesterday, today was much more boring. We saw a large group of bottlenose dolphins this morning. One of them came up to the Oceana Ranger and after discovering that we were the same old “people from Oceana”, it left.

I couldn’t ask for more from my first day on board the Oceana Ranger. A sunny day with calm seas. The ROV went down to 650 meters today. Not bad!
