In front of the coast of Almería, approximately 16 nautical miles from the coast, the Abubacer crest rises. It consists of three elevations aligned in a SW-NE direction, similar to the mountain ranges as we know them on land, but in this case underwater.

Olives under the sea

Today is my second day on the Ranger and it is my turn to write about my sensations and discoveries –I’m thrilled, of course. The morning starts with an almost completely calm sea and we start our trip southbound towards Seco de los Olivos (Chella Bank) from Almerimar. We intend to make at least two immersions in the secondary elevations that accompany that seamount.

The Chella Bank or Seco de los Olivos has already demonstrated that it is worthy of protection, given the great diversity of species and habitats it houses. But, if it is possible, this small mountain is even more diverse, because it also seems to have a certain cultural value.

Today we the divers have a double session, like in the local cinema when I was a boy. We are delighted, even more when the place promises: we are referring to the surroundings of La Herradura, on the coast of Granada, an area that stands out because of its rich biodiversity, especially when it comes to invertebrates. Firstly, we dive in the deepest area, Punta de La Mona, where we descended to -38m to find a lovely scenery of coral trees that, together with big tube anemones, stand out like white marks on the rocky bottom.

Recently, the Spanish Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Environment [Ministerio de Medio Ambiente, Medio Rural y Marino (MARM)] has approved, through a positive environmental impact declaration, the surveying of a large marine area in the search for fossil fuels, that could be found at more than 1600 metres, on the sea floor at a depth of 200 metres.

Today we have navigated towards a new submerged elevation, to see what we could find in its depths. We are referring to Algarrobo bank (it is the name given to some kinds of marine elevations) submerged in front of Malaga, approximately 20 nautical miles from the Spanish coast. When we left the port of Almerimar, with a few hours of navigation ahead, some of us thought: “good sea today to see cetaceans”. The sea was like a plate and the sky, although it was a bit cloudy, was not going to stop the spectacle we would witness:
