The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity to promote a worldwide campaign to raise public awareness about protecting biological diversity. One of the priorities of this important event is to encourage organisations, institutions, foundations, NGOs, companies and the public in general to implement specific measures to halt the loss of global biodiversity.

World Oceans Day (8th of June)

The first observance of World Oceans Day allows us to highlight the many ways in which oceans contribute to society.  It is also an opportunity to recognize the considerable challenges we face in maintaining their capacity to regulate the global climate, supply essential ecosystem services and provide sustainable livelihoods and safe recreation.

European Maritime Day

The European Maritime Day is the occasion to pay tribute to "maritime Europe" and put all maritime sectors and activities in the spotlight to help European citizens realise the real outreach and variety of sea-related activities going on in Europe and provoke reflection on the crucial role the seas play in our everyday life.

Shark Autumn 2009 and European Shark week 2007 – 2008

During these events, aquariums, dive clubs and other organizations helped host more than 100 events and together we collected more than 20,000 signatures for sharks protection.

IUCN Barcelona 2008

The IUCN is the largest and oldest worldwide environmental network. It is a democratic union that includes over 1,000 government and non-governmental organisations as well as roughly 11,000 voluntary scientists and experts in approximately 160 countries. The IUCN’s activity is mainly focused on conserving biodiversity, which involves halting the disappearance of animal and plant species and the destruction of natural environments. Oceana participated in the IUCN meeting in Barcelona in October 2008, during which the Oceana Ranger hosted two press conferences.
