The main islands of the Seychelles—the Inner Islands—are made of granite, rising over 3,000 ft (900 m) above sea level on top of the Seychelles Bank. The other islands to the southwest—the Outer Islands—are coral islands (atolls) on top of seamounts. The Seychelles Bank is the most northerly part of the submarine Mascarene Plateau, which extends as far as the island of Réunion in the south. This continental fragment broke off from India around 65 million years ago as the current Mid-Indian Ridge started spreading.
