Dr. Michael Hirshfield, Senior Vice President of international ocean conservation organization Oceana issued this statement on today's announcement by Ken Salazar, Secretary of the Interior, concerning the Cape Wind project:

“Oceana applauds Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and President Barack Obama for their work to make the Cape Wind Project a reality.  Approval of this offshore wind project represents a huge step forward for American clean energy.

We hope that today’s decision on Cape Wind will help set in motion a series of actions leading to additional American offshore wind projects.  It sends a clear signal to turbine manufacturers and supporting companies that the U.S. means business on clean energy and climate change.”

With Cape Wind, the United States will be following Europe’s nearly 20 year lead in the offshore wind industry. The United States can learn from Europe’s successes and mistakes, setting its course toward developing the manufacturing and technology base to allow the U.S. to be a leader in the clean energy sector. To further support offshore wind development in the United States, we must:

  • Eliminate our addiction to oil and other fossil fuels
  • Stop subsidizing dirty fuels
  • Encourage domestic manufacturing of clean energy technologies
  • Create a favorable business environment for further clean energy investment
