Oceana Hosts WTO Public Forum Panel in Geneva

Oceana hosted a panel discussion at the World Trade Organization (WTO) Public Forum Friday, September 17, 2010, entitled “The Future of Trade and the Environment: Creating the WTO’s Solution for Trade, Development, and Sustainable Oceans.”

During the session, leading international fisheries scientists Dr. Rainer Froese from Leibniz-Institute fur Meereswissenschaften in Kiel, Germany, Dr. Anthony Charles, from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and Ricardo Melendez-Ortiz, chief executive of the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) discussed the implications of global environmental issues on the multilateral trading system and the role and responsibility of the WTO to contribute to international solutions to these challenges.

The session, moderated by former U.S. Ambassador to the WTO Peter Allgeier, focused on global fisheries depletion and the WTO fisheries subsidies negotiations as a tangible example of how global environmental challenges and issues of natural resources sustainability are shaping world trade, and how the WTO can contribute to solving global environmental problems through new approaches and trade tools.
