Federal Policy Director
Washington, DC, USA
Corry Westbrook joined Oceana in August 2011, and she creates, coordinates and implements federal policy and legislation for Oceana. As Federal Policy Director she has the pleasure of working on all of Oceana’s North American campaigns including: fisheries management, fighting seafood fraud and illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, stopping new oil and gas leasing, mitigating ocean acidification, expanding off-shore wind capacity, eliminating foreign government subsidies for commercial fishing that are environmentally unstable and unfairly distorting global markets, and protecting threatened and endangered species, including her favorite – whales. Corry works with members of Congress and their staff, Administration officials, the conservation community, activists, and other stakeholders to move legislation and policies forward to protect our oceans.
Before joining Oceana Corry worked at the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) as Legislative Director, primarily on energy, climate, appropriations, endangered species, public lands and invasive species campaigns. At NWF, she worked with NWF affiliates, board members and coalition partners to lobby members of congress, organize Senate and House issue briefings and press activities, and coordinate conservation community-wide activities. She managed NWF’s invasive species legislative program and acted as a liaison and a founding member of the National Environmental Coalition on Invasive Species, was a contributing author to the book Cane Toads and Other Rogue Species, and served as NWF’s liaison with the Department of Defense. Prior to joining NWF, Corry was a Regional Grassroots Coordinator for the National Audubon Society, managing an 8-state region. Before moving into the conservation community she worked at the Environmental Protection Agency as a Policy Analyst for almost four years and served as a Peace Corp Volunteer in the Eastern Caribbean. Corry holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, with a minor in Biology, from Florida International University and a Masters in Environmental and Natural Resource Policy from the George Washington University.
