CITES was a disappointment for the oceans. The delegates voted to protect only one species of shark -- the porbeagle -- and that protection was reversed at the end of the meeting.
Without further protections, these sharks are headed toward extinction as a result of the international demand for their fins, skin, meat and liver oil.
