This Year's Christie’s Green Auction a Success

Last week, international art collectors, philanthropists, celebrities and designers convened for the third year in a row for Christie’s Green Auction.

Last year, the evening's festivities raised a record-breaking $2.4 million for four of the world's leading, science-based environmental nonprofits: Oceana, Natural Resources Defense Council, Central Park Conservancy and Conservation International.

The Green Auction’s companion online auction, powered by charitybuzz, will continue through Thursday, and includes a day with President Bill Clinton, a 13-day safari in Kenya and a volleyball lesson with Gabby Reece.

And if you can’t afford to bid on a safari or celeb experience, you can also text GREEN to 80888 to donate $10.

A huge thanks to everyone who has helped make this year’s auction a success!

One More Way to Give to Oceana

As we gear up for the holiday season, we are excited to announce that there is now one more way to support our work to protect the oceans: through a Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), the world's largest annual workplace giving collective.

The mission of the CFC is "to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all."

If you’re a federal employee, you can designate Oceana as your charity of choice through CFC #10051.

Your valuable donations to Oceana will support our campaigns to save threatened marine wildlife, stop ocean pollution, promote responsible fishing and combat climate change and ocean acidification.

For help setting up giving through the CFC, please contact CFC Customer Support via email or at 202.465.7230.  If you are not a federal employee, check out the other ways you can support Oceana!

Vote for Oceana to Win $100K from Garnier!

We could win $100,000 - but we need your votes.

Garnier is donating $100,000 to EarthShare, an organization that represents over 400 non-profits, including Oceana. Vote for clean water and you could help Oceana win $100,000 to share with two other great organizations, American Rivers and Surfrider.

Voting is easy and quick. Just go to the Garnier voting website and select "Clean Water". You will be asked for your email address and birthday. You must be at least 18 years old to vote.

That's it! Only takes about 15 seconds once a day to help protect our oceans.

If we win, here’s what we could accomplish with Garnier's donation:

  • We will continue to fight offshore drilling and protect seals, dolphins and whales from the dangers of another spill.
  •  We will continue to work for better protections for sharks all over the world.
  •  We will continue working to ban destructive fishing practices, like bottom trawling, in millions of square miles of ocean, including the Mediterranean Sea and Belize’s coral reefs.

Plus, there’s something in it for you. After your vote, you’ll get a $3 Garnier HerbaShine coupon or a $1 Garnier Fructis® coupon and a sweepstakes entry to win a year’s supply of free Garnier products.

So go on, vote for Clean Water once a day to support Oceana, and spread the word!

Christie’s Green Auction Approaches

Andy Sharpless is the CEO of Oceana.

I wanted to give you advance notice of Christie’s Green Auction: A Bid to Save the Earth on March 29th at New York’s Rockefeller Center. This special event premiered last year, raising an unprecedented $2.4 million for Oceana, Conservation International, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Central Park Conservancy.

I applaud Christie’s for its vision and initiative; every item up for bid is donated by generous supporters, and Christie’s is waiving all customary auction fees so that all proceeds benefit the groups.

A Bid to Save The Earth will include the live auction at Christie’s on March 29th as well as an online silent auction at Charity Buzz that started yesterday.

The auction features coveted celebrity experiences, upscale eco-vacations and other once-in-a-lifetime experiences. You can bid to win a day shadowing President Bill Clinton; a three-day getaway on the luxury super yacht Lady Sheridan during the Cannes Film Festival offered by the owners and Burgess Yachts; and a ten-night trip featuring the exceptional wildlife of Tanzania and the stunning beaches of Mozambique offered by Nomad Tanzania, Vamizi Island and Journeys by Design.

Get Your Charity Poster for the Gulf

Here’s one more way you can help the Gulf -- while upping your cool points.

The Heads of State, who have designed posters for the likes of Wilco, Modest Mouse and Sonic Youth, have designed an Oil Drop poster (pictured here), and they’re donating half of the sale price of each -- that's $20 per poster -- to Oceana.

You can feel pretty good about that (we sure do.) Get your posters here and spread the word.

Going Once, Going Twice...

Okay, so stop me if you've heard this one…

What happens when four top NGOs team up with a world renowned art dealer for Earth Day?

You get an unprecedented partnership that culminates in Christie’s First Annual Green Auction: A Bid to Save the Earth. Wait, did you think I was telling a joke?

Oceana, along with Natural Resources Defense Council, Conservation International and The Central Park Conservancy, NBC Universal, Barney’s of New York, Deutsche Bank and Target have been working to put together the April 22 auction that takes place at Christie’s in Rockefeller Center in New York as part of the 40th celebration of Earth Day.

Christie’s is waiving its usual fees, so every penny from the live auction and silent auction goes to the four charities. A ton, and I mean a ton, of amazing artwork and items are up for bid the night of the event, but you don’t have to be at the event to make a bid to save the earth.

Today the online silent auction launches and along with the artwork and items up for bid there are a boat-load (pun most definitely intended) of experiences on the block including swimming lessons with Oceana supporter and gold medalist Aaron Peirsol (with a $5,000 bid as of 10 a.m. this morning) and sailing lessons with Ocean Conservation Yacht Club Commodore Kristen “The America” Berry.

Here are a few of my personal favorites:
