Oceana scientists and marine researchers embark on at-sea expeditions to document Baltic Sea habitats, species and fisheries.
Divers and underwater robots (ROVs) help gather evidence to support the protection of areas of ecological interest and information on illegal fishing. After the expeditions, Oceana publishes reports and GIS maps that include all relevant findings. Our aim is to galvanize the EU and relevant national governments to enforce existing fishing regulations and increase the quality and quantity of the designated marine protected areas.
The Baltic expedition, led by oceanographer Xavier Pastor, executive director of Oceana Europe, took place aboard the Hanse Explorer, a 48-meter certified ice class expedition vessel build for long exploration voyages and diving operations, which has also been adapted to serve as a platform for the ROV.
