SEA TURTLES
Sea turtles, as ancient as the dinosaurs, are known to swim throughout all the world’s oceans except the Arctic. They are highly sensitive to Earth’s magnetic field and use it to navigate as they travel. A sea turtle can live to be almost 200 years old! However, all six species of these gentle creatures that swim in U.S. waters are listed as threatened or endangered with extinction under the Endangered Species Act because of commercial fishing, water pollution and coastal development. Each year, hundreds of thousands of sea turtles become casualties of dirty fishing methods, drowning in driftnets and on long-line hooks.
