The more than 400,000 sea turtles that get caught each year on the hooks of the longline fleets on both sides of the Atlantic are, according to Oceana, victims of a fishing technique that is used to catch swordfish, tuna and, occasionally, sharks. Sea turtles are an unwanted species, as are stingrays, sunfish, pompanos and dolphinfish, as well as certain species of marlin, tuna and sharks.
