Oceana x Blancpain Partnership

As Oceana’s exclusive timepiece partner, Blancpain is making a significant impact on Oceana’s campaigns to protect marine habitats and biodiversity. Blancpain partnered with Oceana on scientific research expeditions off the coasts of Mexico and Southern California, helping Oceana conduct dive surveys, eDNA analysis, and underwater mapping. The Mexican expeditions resulted in the creation of Bajos del Norte National Park, the largest marine protected area in the Gulf of Mexico. The Southern California expeditions will be complete in 2025 and  are supporting Oceana’s campaign to protect the rich biodiversity in the waters off of Southern California  from destructive fishing methods such as set gillnets.

These projects are part of the Blancpain Ocean Commitment, which has co-financed dozens of major scientific expeditions.

Channel Islands Expeditions

CHANNEL ISLANDS EXPEDITIONS

The ocean off the coast of Southern California is known as the “Galapagos of North America” because of the unique combination of nutrient-rich waters, undersea banks and rocky islands. As expedition partners, Oceana and Blancpain are documenting the thousands of species found around the Channel Islands. This abundance is threatened by deadly set gillnets that target only a few species but end up killing more than 60% of the animals caught. Oceana will use the photos, videos, and data from these expedition to campaign for regulations to reduce the impact of gillnets.

Gulf of Mexico Expeditions

GULF OF MEXICO EXPEDITIONS

In 2021 and 2022, Oceana and Blancpain partnered on a series of expeditions to document marine life in the Gulf of Mexico. Using cutting edge eDNA analysis and photogrammetry, our research led to the creation of Bajos del Norte National Park. This park covers coral reefs inhabited by more than 3,000 species including grouper, octopus, and spiny lobster. Importantly, it connects with the nearby Southern Reefs and Alacranes Reef National Parks to form a conservation corridor for migrating species, including sharks and sea turtles. This marine corridor totals more than 22,000 square miles and is the largest marine protected area in the Gulf of Mexico.

Timepieces for Good

TIMEPIECES FOR GOOD

Blancpain generously donates timepieces and experiences, which are auctioned in association with Oceana’s signature events. Funds raised support Oceana’s campaigns to restore ocean abundance.

Blancpain Ocean Commitment

BLANCPAIN OCEAN COMMITMENT

Through the Blancpain Ocean Commitment (BOC), the watchmaker’s support for ocean exploration and preservation extends beyond our partnership. Blancpain has co-financed dozens of major scientific expeditions, helped establish marine protected areas around the world, and presented award-winning documentary films, underwater photography exhibitions, and publications.
