Zara was born and raised in Mauritius, and has always made the ocean a way of life.
She rejoins Oceana after completing an M.A in International Environmental Policy with a focus in ocean and coastal resource management at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies. Both her masters studies and her B.A. in Environmental Biology and Maritime Studies from Williams College have propelled her to lead meaningful ocean advocacy work. This includes working at Oceana's Headquarters on feasibility studies, fundraising for new offices, and campaigning against harmful fisheries subsidies. She also produced an award-winning documentary advocating for the first national seasonal octopus fishing closure in Mauritius and designed and implemented sustainable financing mechanisms for ocean management in small Caribbean islands with the Waitt Institute.
