Oceana Mexico seeks a scientist who plays a critical role in our campaigns. Whoever occupies this position will have a central role and in some cases responsibility to conduct research on the main themes of our campaigns, develop and achieve public policy initiatives and prepare Oceana technical reports. She/he will maintain a wide network of contacts with scientists and representatives of other organizations, will supervise research projects carried out by consultants, colleagues and allies, and will be focused on developing the activities and research necessary to strengthen our campaigns.
• Act as spokesperson for Oceana Mexico on scientific issues • Supervise scientific activities and research development for Oceana Mexico • Carry out literature reviews and keep updated and develop materials on innovation and best practices in the protection of marine resources • Carry out technical reviews of public policies on marine conservation and fisheries in Mexico • Keep the Oceana leadership team informed on scientific issues and campaign recommendations. • Establish relationships with potential allies • Work with other scientists from Oceana around the world in specific campaigns and in institutional development • Write and review scientific reports for Oceana Mexico • Assist the Vice President of Oceana Mexico in the reports that must be given to the organization's executives and donors • Facilitate the flow of information and documentation on scientific topics for campaigns
• Work closely with campaign managers to develop materials and positions related to Oceana campaigns • Other responsibilities assigned to you as needed • Availability to travel
Academic background and experience: • Master's degree in natural sciences or disciplines related to marine conservation, restoration or sustainable management of natural resources • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in marine conservation and oceans research • Experience working in conservation in Mexico. • Professional experience in other countries is desirable
Skills and Knowledge: • Must have an exceptional ability to work effectively in a team environment • Experience completing projects in tight deadlines and effectively managing a demanding workload, multiple tasks and projects, and the ability to support campaigns effectively • Desire and ability to advocate for complex conservation positions in adverse environments • Ability to work in a dynamic work environment with changing and competitive priorities • Strong oral and written communication skills both in Spanish and English • Great analytical and synthesis capacity • Quantitative analysis and capacity to perform, evaluate, review, interpret and represent databases and statistics • Research skills and ability to quickly synthesize information • Able to cultivate relationships in international time zones; willing to work in non-standard office hours • Creative, energetic, adaptable • Deep personal commitment to conservation, marine and ecological causes
