Science and Strategy Intern

General Summary

Oceana seeks an intern with experience in scientific research and information management and a passion for the oceans.  The intern will support initiatives to enhance the collaboration and sharing of knowledge and expertise among our 9 international offices and 45+ scientific staff. Working with the Deputy Chief Scientist and Science Associates, they will maintain Oceana’s information collection and management systems, including the education of new users about research and collaboration tools. They will also aid the Science and Strategy team in project coordination and responding to research requests.

Job Requirements

Education and work experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in marine sciences or a related field
  • Experience with assembling, curating and organizing data and resources
  • Familiarity with citation managers (e.g., EndNote, Zotero) and/or collaborative tools (e.g., Slack, Vivo, SalesForce)
  • Experience surveying and analyzing the scientific literature, and synthesizing scientific information for non-technical audiences
  • Experience creating learning materials for a variety of audiences

Skills and knowledge:

  • Demonstrated interest in the oceans or the environment
  • Interest in and comfort with maintaining databases and information management systems
  • Organized working style and attention to detail
  • Adaptable to changing plans in a dynamic work environment
  • Science communication expertise is preferred

Internships are paid, full-time in our Washington, DC office for a minimum of three months. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed periodically.
