Senior Staff Accountant

In this position you will be a key player in Oceana’s financial operations, ensuring that financials are accurate and timely, that the trains run on time, information is disseminated, processes are improved, and quality work products are produced. Oceana is seeking a Senior Staff Accountant who reports to our US Accounting Manager. This is an exciting opportunity to join our dedicated team that is working to protect marine wildlife, while also enhancing the capacity of the oceans to feed a growing population. Ocean conservation is not only critical to reducing the impacts of climate change but also to saving the livelihoods of fishers, their families, and their communities.
The Senior Staff Accountant is critical to the efficient functioning of the finance department and is responsible for maintaining Oceana’s general ledger, assisting with the audit and tax preparation, and managing the US payroll.
This individual manages a varied and high-volume workload and works closely with other staff to manage projects, timelines, and deliverables. Candidates for this position must thrive in a fast-paced environment with rapidly changing needs. They must be comfortable multitasking numerous responsibilities, handling confidential matters, proactively facilitating interdepartmental information exchange, and maintaining a collaborative alliance with internal and external stakeholders. Candidates must have a superior attention to detail and excellent written and verbal communications skills. Ideal candidates must be problem-solvers and possess excellent customer service skills, as well as be extremely organized and responsive.
Strong candidates will have at least five years of relevant, progressive accounting experience, CPA strongly preferred. This position reports to the US Accounting Manager and is based in Washington, DC.

Oceana’s US offices have operated on a hybrid schedule and staff have been required to work from their assigned office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. With agreement between the employee and their supervisor, the employee may work from home Monday and Friday. Oceana continually evaluates safety protocols and updates our practices on an ongoing basis based on the CDC community level color coding system of green, yellow and red.
