Spotted Garden Eel
Spotted garden eels get their name from the many black spots that cover their bodies. These spotted eels can be seen swaying in the turbulent waters while the bottom of their bodies stay anchored in the holes they call their home.
Spotted garden eels are the most widely distributed of the garden eels, they can be found in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean along coastlines. They make their homes of large colonies of hundreds of individuals, in sandy bottoms or near reefs. These little eels are around 30-45 centimeters long, but they appear even smaller than this because a significant part of their body remains anchored in their burrows. Spotted garden eels get their name from the many small black dots as well as three large black spots that cover their white bodies.
Spotted garden eels are active during the day for feeding and courting activities, and during the night these eels retreat entirely into their homes. From their homes in the sand, spotted garden eels keep most of their bodies in their burrows, sticking their heads out to feed on zooplankton, small drifting plankton marine organisms. Their movement is feeding is limited as their bodies remain anchored in their holes, and their feeding area is determined by how much of their bodies is outside of their burrow. The spotted garden eels also use their burrow homes as a means of defense from predators, retreating into them when approached or threatened. In addition to their defense mechanisms, these spotted garden eels have fewer natural predators and natural competitors due to the turbulence and water flow rates where they live.
The spotted garden eel is considered to be relatively abundant and does not face any known major threats. Like all species, however, it depends on healthy, clean oceans to survive.
