Brazil Establishes Science-Based Catch Limits for Red Snapper

The Brazilian government approved science-based catch limits for the endangered southern red snapper, the country’s second most valuable seafood export. Despite its importance, red snapper was longed fished without restriction. Oceana’s research, including published studies in 2020 and 2023, identified catch limits as a key measure to rebuild the population. This analysis, along with Oceana’s sustained advocacy, helped to overcome years of delays and put the fishery on a path toward recovery. The new regulation also establishes minimum catch sizes and requires fishers to report their catch and submit logbooks to improve monitoring and compliance.
