Aquaculture: What Oceana Does

aquacultureOceana believes that legislation and regulations that protect the marine environment must be in place before the development of offshore aquaculture facilities is allowed in U.S. waters.

In South America, Oceana works to stop the expansion of the salmon  farming industry south of the areas where it is currently located in Chile.  Additionally, we aim to raise the environmental and sanitation standards for the production of farmed salmon in order to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of the industry.

In Europe, Oceana works to reduce the harm caused by bluefin tuna fattening pens, where wild tuna are captured and fed heavily before they are sold. Wild populations of Atlantic bluefin tuna are already at all-time lows and additional captures to supply tuna fattening operations could accelerate their decline.
