Seven years ago, on April 20, 2010, the BP Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded, killing 11 people and causing the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Oil gushed into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days, dumping more than 200 million gallons of oil into Gulf waters, affecting coastal communities, state and local economies, fishermen and marine wildlife from Texas to Florida.

Last year, Oceana published a report on the effects of the BP disaster, which continues to impact marine life and human health. Some of the report’s key findings included:

?An estimated 600,000 to 800,000 birds died as a result of the spill.

?50,000 people involved in spill cleanup were exposed to chemicals that severely damage lung tissue.

?The impact of the oil spill on fisheries could total $8.7 billion by 2020, including the loss of 22,000 jobs.

It’s been seven years, nearly to the day, since the BP disaster and President Trump is preparing to sign an executive order aimed at expanding dirty and dangerous offshore drilling to new areas like the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific oceans, as well as the Eastern Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida.

Now is the time to act to stop another offshore drilling disaster from ever happening again.

What You Can Do

On September 21, 2014, the Peoples Climate Movement organized the Peoples Climate March, the day before the UN Climate Summit in New York City. As world leaders arrived, 400,000 people marched to demand action to stop the global climate crisis.

Oceana is a proud sponsor of the Peoples Climate March, taking place on April 29 in Washington, D.C. and numerous other cities. Join us as we march from the Capitol to the White House, for oceans, climate, jobs and justice. Those who can’t make it to Washington can find sister marches closer to home.

You can also add your name to Oceana’s petition, calling on Congress to stop President Trump’s offshore drilling plan and support protecting our coast from the dangers of offshore drilling.

Our oceans, marine wildlife and coastal communities are counting on you to say NEVER AGAIN to another BP-like disaster. Join us in the fight to #ProtectOurCoast and #StopTheDrill. It’s time to #StandForOceans.
