Today, President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau issued a Joint Statement on Climate, Energy, and Arctic Leadership in which they committed to work together to take steps toward a sustainable future for the Arctic region. The leaders reiterated their commitments to stewardship and conservation in the Arctic and to taking meaningful action to address the threats posed by climate change and industrial activities.

In response to the announcement, Michael LeVine, Pacific senior counsel for Oceana, issued the following statement:

“We congratulate President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau on today’s historic announcement. The leadership and spirit of collaboration demonstrated by Canada and the United States are vital steps toward a sustainable future for the Arctic region. Oceana looks forward to working with the governments of both countries to help fulfill the commitments made today.

Neither the Arctic Ocean nor the threats confronting it are confined by political boundaries. Today’s agreement will make the United States and Canada accountable to each other for choices that affect the shared region. A sustainable future for the Arctic depends on good choices based on precaution, inclusion and science.”
