Oceana, a leading non-profit ocean advocacy group dedicated to restoring and protecting the world’s oceans, today announced that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton will be a recipient of its 2003 Oceana Partners Award. Oceana will recognize Clinton for her many successful efforts as a Senator and as the First Lady to protect the nation’s oceans and waterways. The award will be presented by her longtime friend, actor-activist Mary Steenburgen, on December 3rd at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
“Senator Clinton’s commitment to preserving the world’s oceans has been a tremendous boost for ocean advocates everywhere,” said Oceana CEO Andrew Sharpless. “From protecting fish breeding areas to cleaning up environmental health hazards, Senator Clinton has fought to prevent the irreversible collapse of fish populations and marine mammals, and to ensure that other sea life remains healthy and vibrant. We are proud to make her an Oceana partner, and we look forward to working together in years to come.”
Clinton has quickly distinguished herself as one of the Senate’s most passionate advocates for environmental and public health protection. She has used her seat on the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee to challenge the nation’s environmental agencies to do more to promote environmental conservation. She is also a steadfast supporter of restoring Long Island Sound, an important nursing area for many ocean fish species. And earlier this year, Clinton joined California Senators Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer to strike provisions in the Energy Bill that would have undermined current protections against new offshore drilling along California and other coastal states.
Producer Brian Grazer, Director Ron Howard and Ocean Explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau Also to be Honored
Oceana will also name Producer Brian Grazer and Director Ron Howard 2003 Partner Award recipients, and famed ocean explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau will receive the first ever Ocean Hero Award. Howard and Grazer have devoted considerable energy and resources to promoting public education on ocean issues and have consistently lent their support to government policy makers with favorable environmental records. Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the famous ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, is President and Founder of Ocean Futures Society, a non-profit marine conservation organization that fosters a strong conservation ethic for our oceans.
The Oceana Partners Award is given annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to preserving and restoring the environment, and whose stewardship has helped to ensure the vitality of the environment for future generations.
