#NoNewLeases: President Biden can “get that done” in the next Five-Year plan.
THE PRESIDENT: No more drilling. There is no more drilling. I haven’t formed any new — new drilling.

AUDIENCE MEMBER: (Inaudible) — … [drilling] off the Gulf of Mexico?
THE PRESIDENT: That was before I was President. We’re trying to work on that, get that done. (Applause.) Thank you.

In the days leading up to the 2022 election, President Biden delivered remarks at a rally in New York. After he concluded, an audience member asked the president about ending new offshore drilling, to which he responded by saying, “We’re trying to work on that, get that done.”
President Biden pledged to end new drilling on the campaign trail, and he has a great opportunity to deliver and get that done by issuing the next Five-Year plan with #NoNewLeases for dirty and dangerous offshore oil drilling.
Oceana found that permanent offshore drilling protections for unleased federal waters could prevent over 19 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions as well as more than $720 billion in damages to people, property, and the environment. 19 billion tons is the equivalent of taking every car in the nation off the road for 15 years — or nearly three times the total annual emissions in the U.S.
Offshore drilling is fueling our ever-worsening climate crisis and threatens the lives and livelihoods of millions of Americans who rely on a clean, healthy ocean. President Biden can protect our coasts from devastating oil spill disasters by stopping the expansion of offshore drilling.
