Daniel is Senior Analyst in Oceana’s Science & Strategy team.

He leads strategic research, analysis, and writing on a wide range of marine and international fisheries governance issues. His primary focus is on delivering the Transparent Oceans Initiative, a project aimed at catalyzing policy reform by uncovering the scale, activities, and impacts of industrial and distant-water fishing fleets.

Before joining Oceana in March 2022, Daniel spent over a decade working in academia and the private sector. He has led research and evaluation projects for NGOs, government agencies, and private organizations across worldwide, including UK Defra, the European Commission, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the World Bank. His diverse research portfolio spans fisheries economics and subsidies, international maritime governance, socio-economic monitoring and evaluation, IUU fishing, fishers’ rights, and beneficial ownership in fisheries.

Daniel holds a BSc in Marine Biology, an MSc in International Marine and Environmental Consultancy, and a PhD in Marine Ecosystems and Governance.

Based in Bristol, Daniel spends much of his free time trail running or exploring the city’s vibrant record shops.
