Love Under the Sea: A Sustainable Seafood Date Night
BY: Jessica McLean
Valentine’s Day is all about celebrating love for your partner, but our oceans and the planet need love too! So why not dive into a romantic evening with a sustainable seafood dinner at home? Not only will you impress your significant other with your command of the kitchen, but you’ll also show some love to the oceans by choosing seafood that’s responsibly sourced.
There are lots of options when choosing the perfect sustainable dish to show your loved one you care, but you can’t go wrong with Pacific halibut as the main event. Although available fresh from March to November, you can find it frozen year-round.
Here are a few great reasons to go for it:
1. SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS
Pacific halibut is from the north Pacific – found in the waters around Canada, the U.S., and Russia – using a gear called longlines and is managed sustainably. By choosing responsibly harvested seafood, you’re supporting fisheries that prioritize healthy fish populations and ecosystems, which helps protect the ocean for future generations.
2. HEALTH BENEFITS
Halibut is a lean fish low in saturated fat and sodium and is a good source of protein, niacin, phosphorus, and selenium. It’s a heart-healthy choice, and since you’re making it for a romantic occasion, nothing says “I care” like a healthy meal that promotes well-being.
3. UNIQUE, BUT NOT TOO COMPLEX
Pacific halibut has a mild, delicate flavor and firm texture that’s perfect for showing off your cooking skills without overwhelming your date. Plus, it’s versatile! You can grill, pan-sear, bake, or steam it with a variety of seasonings, making it easy to adapt to your preferred flavor profiles. As a bonus, halibut pairs wonderfully with a variety of wines, sides, and sauces.
If you’re looking for further inspiration, consider Michelin-starred Master Chef Cornelius Gallagher’s Baked Pacific halibut recipe here. Pacific halibut is prepared with espresso, sweet corn, mustard greens, toasted pine nuts and hot basil corn milk. Add a level of sophistication to a smart seafood choice and grab a bottle of Chablis or a dry Riesling to keep the conversation (and wine) flowing!
And nothing says commitment more than couples who commit to taking action together. Check out Oceana’s action page and take a moment to sign a petition with your date. Your relationship (and our oceans) will be better for it.
