Oceana Staff

Devanshi Kasana is the Ocean Science & Impact Fellow in Oceana’s Science & Strategy team.

She holds a BSc from University of Delhi, an MSc from University College London, and a PhD from Florida International University. Although raised in a landlocked state in India, the ocean found her early— sparked by visits to the country’s expansive coastline and a childhood fascination with sharks (thank you, Jaws). Devanshi’s work bridges research and conservation, with a focus on sustainable fisheries, seafood traceability, food security, and equity in ocean governance. Her doctoral work on the shark meat trade in Central America showed how collaborative, science-based fisheries management can drive positive conservation outcomes and build capacity for lasting change. She has worked with both NGOs and government agencies on fisheries sustainability projects across Belize, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, and India. Along with a team of Belizean fishers, she discovered the first sleeper shark in the western Caribbean—a deep-sea find featured by CNN, NPR, and the BBC. At Oceana, Devanshi hopes to continue advancing science-based solutions that safeguard marine ecosystems and support the communities who depend on them. Outside of work, she enjoys pottery, gardening (with mixed success), and hopes to never miss a good sunset.
