Lisa Neyman

Senior Illegal Fishing and Transparency Analyst

Oceana Staff

Lisa joined Oceana’s Illegal Fishing and Transparency team in June 2025.

She holds a BSc. in marine biology and chemistry from Oregon State University, a PostBacc. in GIS from the University of Washington, and an MSc. in Marine Mammal Science from the University of St. Andrews where her thesis focused on comparative habitat modeling for six different cetacean species. Outside of the academic world, and prior to earning her MSc., Lisa has worked on projects studying humpback whale acoustic behavior, monitoring beluga whales, and documenting marine mammal presence in aerial photographic surveys. After her MSc., she pivoted away from field work and found her niche in spatial data science monitoring vessel traffic and contributing to large whale vessel strike reduction efforts at both the State and Federal level. Through all of this, Lisa became more and more interested in ways to better understand how vessels use the ocean and that’s what brought her to the Illegal Fisheries and Transparency team. She is excited to apply her vessel tracking data skills to Oceana’s efforts to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing through transparency. Outside of work you can find Lisa enjoying a good book, outside exploring new hiking and running trails, or cheering on her plants as they grow new leaves.
