New Measures and Innovative Gear Will Help Save Whales from Entanglements in California Crab Fishery

Oceana successfully campaigned for the U.S. state of California to implement new measures to protect endangered humpback whales and leatherback sea turtles from becoming entangled in commercial Dungeness crab fishing gear. The measures include delaying the opening of the 2024-2025 season, early closures, and reduced traps and fishing lines. Also in 2024, the largest and most successful trial of innovative pop-up fishing gear on the U.S. West Coast by commercial California Dungeness crab fishermen landed a total of 292,000 pounds of crab valued at approximately $1.5 million (USD).
