Vice President, Ghana | Oceana

Vice President, Ghana

Do you want to make a difference supporting healthy coastal communities and the ocean life they depend on? Come join our team in Ghana – our first office in Africa, and a new chapter for Oceana – where we will work in partnership with small-scale fishers and local communities to safeguard livelihoods, strengthen food security, and rebuild fisheries.

Founded in 2001, Oceana is the world’s largest advocacy organization focused solely on the oceans. We achieve measurable change by conducting targeted, science-based campaigns with fixed deadlines and clearly articulated goals. Our campaigns focus on reforming policy in countries that are responsible for a quarter of the world’s wild-caught fish, including Belize, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, the United States, the United Kingdom, the 27 countries of the European Union — and now Ghana.

To save the oceans and help feed the world, it’s not just about who catches the most fish, but also who needs fish the most. Restoring the health and abundance of the ocean will not only ensure thriving marine ecosystems, but it will also provide food and livelihoods for millions of people. Many are in small-scale fishery supply chain and depend on daily catches to provide for their families. Oceana works with these artisanal fishers in all the countries where we have teams to deliver results for the ocean and the people who rely on it.

Oceana is seeking a Vice President to lead our new Ghana office. As the first senior leader on the ground, the Vice President, based in Accra, will build and guide a team of professionals in science, policy, law, communications, and community organizing. The Vice President will design and execute campaigns to strengthen the ability of artisanal fishers and fish-dependent communities to maintain their access to abundant local fisheries, their livelihoods and their cultural fishing traditions. We anticipate our work to improve fisheries management and local supply chains, protect critical habitats, and expand the role of artisanal fishers in decision making.

The Vice President for Ghana will also serve as a persuasive and visible spokesperson for Oceana, engaging government officials, media, civil society, and local communities. This leader will represent Ghana on Oceana’s international Executive Committee and contribute to shaping the organization’s global agenda. The Vice President must bring creativity, ambition, sound judgment, and the ability to quickly identify opportunities, mobilize resources, securing change using a range of advocacy tactics.
