PROTECTING OUR CLIMATE BY STOPPING OFFSHORE DRILLING
Offshore drilling is a dirty and dangerous business that is polluting our oceans and accelerating the climate crisis. Currently, nearly 30% of all oil and gas production comes from offshore areas. Science tells us that stopping the expansion of offshore drilling has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions more than any other ocean-based solution.
As of today, thanks to campaigning by Oceana and our allies, about 75,000 miles of coastline in the United States and Belize have been protected from the threat of offshore drilling, covering more than 2.5 million square miles of ocean.
Oceana is continuing to work to protect our coasts and oceans from the threat of offshore drilling, while also promoting responsibly sourced offshore wind, rebuilding fisheries as a climate-friendly source of protein, and reducing the use of unnecessary single-use plastics that contribute to climate change during every stage of their life cycle.
