Illegal Unreported Unregulated (IUU) Fisheries Campaign Intern

Oceana is looking for an Illegal Unreported Unregulated Fisheries Campaign Intern

In close collaboration with the campaign director, the intern will undertake research aimed at establishing links between EU citizens and illegal fishing. This research will be used to create advocacy materials that will then be presented to Members of the European Parliament, Member States and the European Commission. The intern will assist the campaign director in preparing these materials.

This is three month internship, estimated dates October to December 2024.

Main Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the production of research results related to the IUU campaign (two briefing notes and one analysis).
  • Assist the IUU Campaign team in its research and policy-making tasks, possibly also in its communication or logistics tasks, in order to advance efforts to make public information on EU nationals owning vessels in third countries or to improve import controls.
  • Participate in direct outreach (meetings or email communications) to EU decision-makers and businesses to advance efforts to make information on EU nationals owning vessels in non-EU countries publicly available or to improve import controls, where appropriate.        Prepare and review research on IUU fishing cases and contribute to its dissemination to decision-makers.
  • Contribute to advocacy and coordination with Members of the European Parliament and the future Commissioner.
  • Assist in organizing and participating in workshops organized by Oceana with key stakeholders, as required.
  • Daily coordination with campaign directors or other Oceana colleagues to ensure consistency and timeliness of messages, as well as to take full advantage of Oceana’s website, products and resources.
  • Perform any other duties within the scope of application.

Education and work experience:

  • Master’s or bachelor’s degree in progress and interest in environmental work.

Skills and knowledge:

  • Interest in European Commission, policy, and ocean or environmental policy.
  • Knowledge of the ocean and other conservation issues a bonus.
  • Strong research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Energy, enthusiasm, and a strong desire to learn.
  • Ability to work independently on discrete projects.
