Science and Campaigns Coordinating Manager

The Science & Campaign Coordinating Manager will be responsible for organizing and coordinating staff, aligning collective and individual goals, and ensuring the campaigns’ success through the correct planning and monitoring of activities. Additionally, the position would also maintain the scientific expertise and capacity necessary for carrying out the work of campaigns, including researching campaign topics, serving as a technical expert, reviewing campaign documents to ensure scientific accuracy, maintaining a network of outside experts, and translating scientific information into non-technical language for campaign materials.

The Science & Campaign Coordinating Manager will coordinate and monitor science research, assisting the Deputy VP with the management of external consultants, monitoring deliverables, reviewing reports, and writing reports for donors, senior management, the communications team, fundraising team, etc.

This role will directly participate in campaigns representing Oceana as needed. This role will report into the Deputy Vice President            

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • In coordination with the Deputy VP and campaign managers, plan the actions and activities to be carried out per campaign, throughout the year.
  • Jointly with the Deputy VP, define and align individual and group goals and tasks for the campaign success.
  • Monitor the progress of the campaigns and propose changes of activities and strategy as necessary to achieve campaign goals.
  • Propose and lead meetings with the team to coordinate operations and keep the team informed of the development of the campaigns.
  • Lead quarterly planning meetings and keep a planning tool (e.g., Gantt chart) up-to-date and visible to the team.
  • Assist the Deputy VP with the preparation of activity reports for Oceana donors, board of directors and internal departments.
  • Coordinate the scientific research between the campaign directors and the rest of the team.
  • Prepare scopes of work and manage communication with external consultants, monitor deliveries, review and comment on reports and synthesize relevant information for internal use.
  • Support Campaign Directors in the development and implementation of campaign goals, strategies, tactics and materials
  • Engage with legal team to provide consultation and technical expertise on campaign issues
  • Support Oceana’s Communication Team with technical expertise as needed
  • Identify science that could be leveraged to promote campaign goals
  • Manage or co-manage the research, writing and production of technical reports, fact sheets, maps, animations, and other materials
  • Maintain a robust working knowledge of related science and policy practices
  • Coordinates and elaborates scientific research for all campaigns
  • Supports scientific strategies with campaign directors
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as appropriate and necessary to achieve campaign objectives

Job Requirements

Education and work experience:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline such as marine biology, ecology, or environmental science.
  • +4 years of professional experience in marine science and/or policy.
  • Proficiency in English language
  • Proficiency in the use of computer office applications – word processing, spread sheets and presentation.

Skills and knowledge:

  • Strong organizational, planning, and team management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to communicate clearly, diplomatically, and effectively.
  • Ability to accurately synthesize large amounts of information, quickly identify relevant issues or questions, and recommend responses or solutions.
  • Must represent Oceana in a professional and responsible manner, maintain strict confidentiality in working with sensitive information.
  • Able to produce finished products with little supervision.
  • Must adapt to a varied workload.  Some long hours, alternative hours to accommodate international time zones and travel are required.
  • Knowledge of ocean conservation, environment issues and the non-profit community.
