Caribbean Reef Octopus

The Caribbean reef octopus has a dazzling ability to shift colors and patterns in an instant! Found in the warm, shallow waters of southern Florida to the northern coast of South America, this intelligent species spends its days hiding among coral reefs and its nights hunting across the seafloor.

With a body spanning up to 12 centimeters (4.7 inches) long, the Caribbean reef octopus is relatively small compared to some of its relatives. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in brilliance! Though often seen in bright green and blue hues, it can change its color thanks to specialized pigment cells called chromatophores – even though the octopus itself is thought to be colorblind. These quick color changes help it blend seamlessly with coral, sand, or rock, allowing it to evade predators and ambush unsuspecting prey. It also can use this color-changing ability to display patterns or reflections to communicate with other octopuses.

A solitary hunter, this octopus preys primarily on Caribbean spiny lobsters, but also on other creatures like crabs, shrimp, and small fish. They are nocturnal, hunting at night and spending the days in coral reef dens. Caribbean reef octopuses are highly territorial and will defend the area around their den from other octopuses – sometimes even killing and eating other individuals they find in their territory!

Global warming poses a threat to the reefs that the Caribbean reef octopus calls home. Ocean acidification and coral bleaching threaten to destroy the habitat that these creatures depend on. Additionally, they are sometimes harvested by humans on a small scale. However, despite these threats, they are classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to their wide geographic range.

Taking steps to tackle the climate crisis – like stopping the expansion of offshore drilling – can address the acceleration of warming ocean temperatures that degrade coral habitats. Learn more about how Oceana campaigns to protect our climate here.
