Common Clownfish

Finding Nemo isn’t the only thing these fish are known for: common clownfish are renowned also for their distinct orange stripes and their symbiotic relationship with anemones!

Common clownfish are known for their distinct orange color, with three thick white stripes, outlined in black, across their bodies. These fish are widely distributed in the warm, shallow waters of the Indo-Pacific. As their name suggests, they are common and locally abundant in their range. Common clownfish can be up to 11 centimeters (4.3 inches) in length and are believed to live around 6 to 10 years. They make their homes in coral reefs and sheltered lagoon areas, specifically near or in sea anemones. It is with these anemones that clownfish have a special symbiotic relationship with. The anemones offer protection to the clownfish, especially during spawning when the clownfish make their nests close enough to still be protected by the tentacles of the anemones. Meanwhile, the clownfish may eat parasites and boost nutrient exchange and oxygen flow around their host anemone.

While the protection from the anemones greatly reduces the predation that common clownfish face, they still have predators such as the wrasses and damselfish that prey on common clownfish and their eggs. Common clownfish themselves eat mostly zooplankton and algae. As juveniles, all common clownfish initially become males. However, some of these fish will later develop into females! If a female were to die, the largest male of a group will become the female and displays aggression and dominance, beginning to court smaller clownfish.

Despite being listed as a species of Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, these fish still face several challenges. Common clownfish are collected for the aquarium trade which may locally impact the species. As a part of this trade, these fish have become one of the most commercialized species in the world. Additionally, common clownfish may be vulnerable to bleaching events in the coral reefs they call home along with other potential habitat shifts driven by climate change.

As common clownfish may experience habitat degradation in the future because of warming ocean temperatures, addressing sources that are accelerating the climate crisis is crucial. Oceana campaigns to tackle climate change by stopping the expansion of offshore drilling — a major contributor to the crisis.
