Giant Barrel Sponge

The giant barrel sponge is often referred to as the “redwood of the reef” for its impressive size and longevity.

True to its name, the giant barrel sponge can grow to more than 1 meters (3.3 feet) tall and forms wide, large, barrel-shaped structures that dominate the reef landscape. Its surface ranges in color from purple to salmon, depending on the symbiotic microorganisms living within it. Found throughout tropical coral reef environments in the Atlantic Ocean, these sponges grow slowly but can live for centuries — some individuals are estimated to be more than 2,000 years old!

The giant barrel sponge feeds by drawing in seawater through tiny pores, filtering out tiny food particles, and releasing  filtered water back into the ocean. Each sponge can filter huge quantities of water every day, playing a crucial role in maintaining reef water quality. They also provide habitat for a variety of animals in the reef and are a source of food for sea turtles and other wildlife.

Although not currently considered threatened or endangered, giant barrel sponges are vulnerable to environmental changes. Disease outbreaks, coral reef bleaching, and damage from humans can all threaten their health. A particular condition known as sponge orange band disease has been observed in some populations, causing bleaching and death.

Studies have found that when giant barrel sponges are stressed by changing environmental factors, they are much more susceptible to disease and death. As climate change leads to rising ocean temperatures and changing conditions, this could increase the stress and possible mortality of sponges and corals. Oceana campaigns to tackle climate change by stopping the expansion of offshore drilling — a major contributor to the climate crisis
