King Penguin

The second largest of all the penguin species, king penguins are known for their 2024 claim to fame with the birth of Pesto the penguin!

 

Found among sparsely vegetated areas on islands surrounding Antarctica, king penguins are social creatures living in colonies with populations up to 39,000 breeding pairs. However, some lone wanderers have been found as far north as Brazil and South Africa! 

King penguins are unique in that they don’t build nests but instead carry their eggs and young on their feet. They have been observed huddling in large groups during blizzards to conserve heat. Large colonies also have communal crèches — or groups — of chicks that stay together when both parents are foraging at the same time. Known predators include Antarctic and sub-Antarctic fur seals, leopard seals, and orcas. King penguin chicks also face threats from brown skuas and giant petrels. Feeding on cephalopods, small fish, and squid, these penguins can dive to depths up to 322 meters (1,056 feet) and can remain underwater for approximately 10 minutes.  

 

 

Currently populations appear to be increasing, and they are listed as a species of least concern on the IUCN Red List. However, climate change may pose an issue for this species, since as ocean temperatures warm, their prey is driven to further distances or greater depths, making it harder to hunt. While king penguins face several additional threats in parts of their range, including invasive species, new diseases, and disturbance from human activity, these are not considered to pose a serious threat to the future of the species at present.
