Spotted Porcupinefish

These spiky fish have the incredible defensive ability to inflate their bodies to be three times their volume when they are threatened!

 

Spot-fin porcupinefish live in tropic and subtropic shallow waters in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. They make their homes in holes or crevices in coral reefs, lagoons, and even shipwrecks, hiding in these homes during the day. As fully grown adults, these fish are typically around 40 centimeters (15.7 in) long, but they can get as big as 91 centimeters (35.8 inches). Spot-fin porcupinefish are dull brownish green with dark spots spread across their bodies. These fish are covered in long spines that are typically flat against their bodies.

When spot-fin porcupinefish are threatened, they intake great amounts of water, inflating themselves to a much larger size! When inflated, their long spines also stick out straight as an additional defense from predators. Additionally, spot-fin porcupinefish have been reported to be toxic! Despite all these defenses, these fish, particularly juveniles, do have some known predators, including tiger sharks, white marlins, bluefin tuna, and some other large fish. The spot-fin porcupine fish’s own diet consists of hard-shelled prey such as sea urchins, crabs, and clams. They crunch through this meal with their strong jaws and beak-like teeth designed for crushing shells.

 

 

This fish faces no known major threats. However, since this animal relies on healthy coral reef ecosystems, it may be impacted by habitat degradation, coral bleaching, or ocean acidification.
