Offshore Wind

Offshore wind promises a future of clean, abundant energy.

Overview

To end our dependence on fossil fuels and risky offshore drilling, we need to rapidly develop clean energy solutions like offshore wind. Oceana is working to promote offshore wind energy in the United States.

To avoid the dangers of oil spills and the impacts of global warming, we must adopt a new energy strategy, in which clean energy replaces fossil fuels. Offshore wind will reduce carbon pollution and generate clean, renewable energy for future generations.

A modest and gradual development of offshore wind along the East Coast over the next 20 years could create more than 200,000 jobs and generate enough electricity to power more than 115 million households—twice the number of jobs and twice the amount of energy as would be provided by offshore drilling.

More than 1 million acres have already been leased for offshore wind development in the Atlantic. The U.S. is ready to move rapidly to develop clean energy sources, rather than drilling for the dirty fossil fuels of the past. Unlike oil, offshore wind provides power directly to coastal communities where we need energy the most, without the risk of oil spills or carbon pollution.
