Marine Cusa is a marine scientist and senior policy advisor who specialises in seafood transparency, traceability, and fisheries governance.
Her love for the ocean goes back to a childhood traveling the seas on a sailboat. These adventures at sea shaped the person she is today and nurtured a deep desire to study and protect the ocean. At Oceana, she works to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing by advancing transparency and strengthening accountability across the seafood supply chain.
Marine is a Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation and a part-time researcher at the Technical University of Denmark. She holds a PhD in marine science where she developed and applied state-of-the art genetic tools to uncover seafood mislabelling, improve transparency, and strengthen fisheries control. She also holds an MSc in Arctic Marine Biology which lead her to conduct multiple expeditions in Svalbard and Greenland in a quest to better understand the ecological consequences of climate change on Arctic fish species.
Her work has taken her to board both research and fishing vessels throughout the North Atlantic, the Arctic Ocean, Greenland Sea, Celtic and Irish Seas, and the Southern Ocean, including Antarctica. Marine combines her scientific expertise with field experience and is passionate about bridging the gap between marine research and policies to protect the oceans, support sustainable fisheries, and fight for more transparent seafood supply chains.
