Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, actor and Oceana Board Chair Sam Waterston made keynote remarks at the virtual United Nations annual World Oceans Day event (UNWOD). Waterston spoke to the event’s 2021 theme, The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods, emphasizing the importance of healthy and abundant oceans to people and the planet.
“This World Oceans Day, let’s promise one another to keep alive the extraordinary hope and resolve it takes to make a difference: to restore ocean life – the life of our planet – and to safeguard the livelihoods and well-being of our neighbors,” Waterston said. “An abundant ocean is a healthier and more biodiverse ocean. And by increasing ocean abundance, we can help feed a billion people a healthy seafood meal every day, forever. This is why we at Oceana believe that we must save the oceans to help feed the world.”
Oceana campaigns, country-by-country, to win national policy change proven to increase ocean abundance and biodiversity. By implementing science-based fisheries management, protecting critical habitat, and taking other sensible policy actions, governments can restore our oceans. Oceana currently campaigns in countries that, together, account for nearly 30% of the world’s wild fish catch.
This year’s celebration was open to the world by live stream from 10:00AM-5:00PM (EDT) on the United Nations World Oceans Day website (www.unworldoceansday.org/2021). Waterston’s remarks are available at the 2-hour, 38-minute mark on UNWOD’s live stream. UNWOD was produced in partnership with the non-profit organization Oceanic Global. The event was presented by Oceana corporate partner Blancpain and supported by La Mer.
