NOTE: The following is a statement from Oceana Pacific Director, Susan Murray

“We at Oceana, like all Alaskans, are deeply saddened by today’s news that Alaska’s longtime senator, Ted Stevens, has died in a plane crash near Dillingham, Alaska. He was a senator for all Alaskans and a strong voice for good stewardship and sustainability in Alaska’s oceans. More importantly, Senator Stevens was the sort of man who put words into action.

“The Magnuson-Stevens Act, passed in 1976 has remained the foundation of fisheries law in the U.S. It is one of the more progressive fisheries laws in the world. Stevens shepherded through important conservation amendments several times, including in the Sustainable Fisheries Act of 1996 and more recently with the Magnuson Stevens Reauthorization Act of 2006. He was a true advocate for Alaska, and our hearts go out to the family and friends of Alaska’s great Senator Ted Stevens.”
