Oceana Federal Policy Director Ted Morton had the following statement regarding today’s White House response to the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy report recommendations:
“Based on available reports about the White House’s Ocean Action Plan, President Bush has missed a tremendous opportunity to exercise bold leadership to make our sick oceans better. The administration can start making a real difference simply by enforcing existing law to protect our oceans. For example, when the Administration had a chance this week to protect threatened sea turtles caught in scallop dredges, it refused to enforce existing law, allowing hundreds more sea turtles to be caught, injured and killed.
“Making our oceans healthy again is a bipartisan interest – we’ve seen this in the battery of ocean-protection bills that were introduced in Congress this fall. The president should join Congressional leaders and several state governors and seize this important opportunity to protect oceans.”
